Captain H. O. Bassett ProjectCaptain Henry O. Bassett ProjectThe Captain H. O. Bassett project was one of our first projects.
Captain Henry O. Bassett, a former sheriff of Jackson County, was on leave from Company E, 6th Florida Infantry when it was learned the Union army was advancing on Marianna. He offered his services to the local defense troops and was killed during the Battle of Marianna. He is buried close to where he died at St. Luke's Episcopal Church Cemetery. Over the years his headstone has been dislodged and was found lying in the cemetery near it's base. Members of Theophilus West, M.D. Camp No. 1346 met on July 21 and 22, 2006, to re-set his headstone. This brave soldier will not be forgotten. |
