Jason Vander Tipton - Lewis Hyatt


Private Jason Vander Tipton
Company I, 5th Florida Infantry

Jason Vander Tipton, son of Benjamin Tipton and Elizabeth Bostwick, was born in Georgia  on 31 Aug 1832, and he died 21 Jan 1891, at Miller County, Georgia. He enlisted in Captain Spencer's Company on 14 Mar 1862, at Camp Leon, Florida. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland, on 17 Sep 1862. He was wounded in the thigh and lost the use of one leg. Jason was exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Virginia, in Oct 1862 and was discharged on 10 Dec 1862. He was sent home with $41.15 for back pay and clothing. He died before Florida authorized pensions for wounded soldiers. [EGA DATABASE - NARA Pub M251 REEL 67 S-Ti]

Private Lewis Hyatt
Company C, 1st Florida Reserves

Lewis Hyatt enlisted in Company C (Captain Poe's Company), 1st Florida Reserves Infantry on 11 May 1864. He was placed on special detail until his discharge at the end of the war. Lewis died on 6 Mar 1893. [NARA M251 REEL 32 H-N - SOLDIERS OF FLORIDA P.309]
