Here is an example of why so many of our ancestors graves have been lost. This group of unknown graves are found in the Bascom Baptist Church Cemetery with homemade wooded headboards. When these headboards deteriorate, the resting place of these people will be lost forever. PHOTO BY Ashley Pollette.

Thomas Lovett Bevis, son of William Langley Bevis and Jane Virginia Palmer, was born in South Carolina, on 31 Oct 1837, and he died in Jackson County, Florida, on 28 Dec 1907. He enlisted in Company A, 5th Battalion Florida Cavalry on 5 Aug 1862, at Chattahoochee, Florida. He was surrendered at Tallahassee, Florida on 16 May 1865, and paroled at Tallahassee, Florida, on 17 May 1865. [FLORIDA CONFEDERATE PENSION #A00665 - NARA Pub M251 REEL 16 - EGA DATABASE

Elisha Coleman, son of Isaac Coleman and Mary Anderson, was born in Randolph County, Georgia, 26 Jun 1836, and died in Gadsden County, Florida, on 20 Jan 1920. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Georgia Cavalry on 15 Mar 1862. About Aug 1862, he was thrown from his horse during a Dress Parade, breaking his leg. This fracture did not heal correctly and he was discharged. [FLORIDA CONFEDERATE PENSION #A02217 - EGA DATABASE]
John W. Cook, son of William J. and Frances Cook, was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina, on 10 Aug 1843, and died 12 Oct 1907, in Jackson County, Florida. He enlisted in Company F, 2nd Regiment Florida Volunteer Infantry on 13 Jul 1861, at Jacksonville, Florida. His occupation was listed as student at school. John was discharged 5 Jan 1862, at Wynn's Mill, Virginia, due to complications from the measles. John enlisted in Captain Richard Smith's Marianna Dragoons on 14 Mar 1862. Duke Dickson, son of William D. Dickson and Emily Smith Cotton, was born in Jackson County, Florida, 11 Sep 1845, and died 20 Oct 1912. He enlisted in Company A, 5th Battalion Florida Cavalry, on 5 Dec 1863, at Camp Milton, Florida, and served until May 1865. William Forman Dickson, son of William D. Dickson and Emily Smith Cotton, was born in Jackson County, Florida, 28 Jul 1841, and he died 7 Feb 1929. He enlisted in Company I, 4th Florida Infantry Regiment on 9 Sep 1861, at St Vincent Island, Florida. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 1 Feb 1863. He was discharged 28 Mar 1863. William enlisted in Company A, 5th Battalion Florida Cavalry on 3 Mar 1864, and served until the end of the war. Henry W. Grubb was enlisted in Captain Abell's Florida Light Artillery. [NARA PUB M 251 REEL 19]
James Dallas Johnson was born in Jackson County, Florida, 5 May 1846, and died in Jackson County, Florida, on 12 Apr 1916. He enlisted in Company C, 1st Florida Reserves Infantry 2 May 1864, and was discharged at Madison, Florida, on 12 May 1865. [NARA PUB M 251 REEL 32]
Joshua S. Johnson was born in Georgia about 1828 and died in 1865. He enlisted as a private in Company E, 8th Florida Infantry Regiment on 13 May 1862, at Marianna, Florida. He was taken prisoner at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on 2 Jul 1863. The 31 Dec 1863 - 29 Feb 1864 Muster Roll had him back in his company presumably being exchanged. He has a record of being issued clothing in Aug 1864 and the Oct 1864 Muster Roll lists him as present. He was killed at Petersburg, Virginia. [EGA DATABASE - NARA PUB M251 REEL 83]
John W. O'Neal enlisted Company F, 5th Battalion Florida Cavalry on 10 Apr 1862. He was appointed 5th Sergeant on 1 Jan 1864. He was sent to a Confederate Hospital and later assigned to the Invalid Corps. The WPA lists his birth as 1843 and death as 1913. [NARA PUB M251 REEL 17]
Marion Oswald, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Oswald, died 7 Mar 1909. He enlisted on 14 Mar 1862 in Captain Smith's Company (Marianna Dragoons) at Marianna.
