James H. Chambliss was born in 1821. He enlisted in Company A, 5th battalion Florida Cavalry 0n 17 Dec 1863. He was promoted to Full Quartermaster and transferred to Field and Staff. He was surrendered by general Sam Jones on 11 may 1865, and was paroled at Quincy, Florida, on 22 May 1865. [ANCESTRY.COM - NARA PUB M251 REEL 16 A-F]

The 5th Florida Cavalry Battalion organized in 1863 with eight companies. Members were recruited in the counties of Columbia, Escambia, Gadsden, Jackson, Leon,  and Wakulla. The Battalion took an active part in the battles of Olustee, Gainesville, Milton, and Braddock's Farm. General Sam Jones surrendered the at Tallahassee on 10 May 1865.
