George W. Messer, son of Bryant Edward Messer and Martha Jarman, was born near Macon, Georgia, on 8 Jan 1841. He enlisted in the Decatur Guards on 13 Aug 1861. This company was mustered into the Confederate Army as Company D, 17th Georgia Infantry Regiment. George was  wounded in the hip at 2nd Manassas, Virginia, 30 Aug 1862.
