Private John J. Holmes
Company H, 5th Florida Infantry

John J. Holmes was born 27 Dec 1846, in Alabama, and is listed in the Coffee County, Alabama, 1860 census. He enlisted in Company H, 5th Regiment Florida Infantry on 10 Mar 1862. John was wounded in the face at Cold Harbor, Virginia, in 1864 and his last record indicates he was on wounded leave. Prisoner of War records show he returned to duty and was captured at Farmville, Virginia, on 6 Apr 1865. He was paroled at Newport News, Virginia, on 24 Jun 1865. At the time of his parole he was listed as having a light complexion, dark hair, dark eyes, and was 5' 8" tall. On 27 Dec 1906, he married Johnanna Mears. John J. Holmes died on 12 Sep 1912. Johnanna died on 22 Jul 1968. Her death left only two Confederate Widows living in Jackson County, Florida. Mrs. Eulee Davis and Mrs. Malissie Smith were still receiving Confederate Widow pensions in 1968. [Source: Florida Confederate Pension # A02394]

Private Martin Waldroff
Captain Rivers Arkansas Light Artillery

Martin Waldroff was born in Indiana 3 Dec 1830. He enlisted in Captain River's, Arkansas Light Artillery in Oct 1861 and surrendered on 5 May 1865, (see copy of parole) at Milledgeville, Georgia. Martin married Mary Jane Cook Mears on 1 Dec 1892, in Jackson County, Florida. Martin died on 30 Dec 1905, and is buried at Waldroff Cemetery, Jackson County, Florida. RIVERS' BATTERY

Provence's-Humphrey's-Rivers' Battery was organized in the summer of 1861 with men from Fort Smith, Arkansas. The unit was engaged at Elkhorn Tavern, then moved east of the Mississippi River. After being involved in the Kentucky Campaign, it was assigned to McNairs' Brigade and later J. W. Eldridge's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Tennessee. It saw action at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga. In December, 1863, the company was ordered to Atlanta where its guns and equipment were redistributed and the men assigned to other artillery commands. Its captains were John T. Humphrey, David Provence, and John W. Rivers.
