2007 Cemetery Award

Compatriot & Webmaster Ashley Pollette was presented the 2007 National Graves Award by 2nd Brigade Commander Stan Peacock. Compatriot Pollette is the Historian and Webmaster of the Theophilus West, M.D. Camp 1346, and has worked with Commander Daffin, Commander Basford and Adjutant Larry Clere on the cemetery project for Camp 1346. Greenwood Cemetery Clean-up

In August 2008, a very large Laurel Oak Tree fell in the Greenwood Baptist Church Cemetery. The Graves Committee met on Labor Day, September 1, 2008, and started a very long project of cutting and clearing the tree. Many graves were damaged, with one being broken open. The committee plans to clear the tree and repair all the headstones and graves at no cost to the church. A very labor intensive task, but God has helped us. When we came to a problem of a very large limb resting on top of a headstone and another caught in a nearby cedar tree, all work came to a stand still. Within minutes, we heard a truck pull up and three volunteers from the Affordable Tree Service of Tallahassee stepped out and volunteered their expertise. Within minutes the professionals had cleared the limbs and enabled our camp to get back to work.

Day Two of the Greenwood Baptist Church Cemetery clean up was on September 6, 2008. The following members from the West Camp showed up with gloves and chainsaws: Commander Daffin, Commander Basford, Adjutant Clere, 2nd Lieutenant Young, Chaplain Dean, Chaplin Selman, 2nd Brigade Inspector Pollette, and Surgeon Peel. Mrs. Young from the OCR was also in attendance.

The 8th Florida Quincy Young Guards, SCV Camp 703, sent five volunteers, after reading about our project on the internet. The members from Camp 703 are: Jamey Creel, 3rd Brigade Commander; Jim Darby, 2nd Brigade Commander;  Compatriot John Louge; Compatriot David Brinkley; and Compatriot Sean Childers.
We continue to work on the project which should be completed in early January 2009.

The Battle of Marianna, Florida
September 27, 1864

James S. Baker is listed in the 1860 Jackson County census as being twenty-four years old and living in the household of James L. G. Baker, a wealthy Jackson County planter. He enlisted in Captain Robinson’s Club Cavalry Home Guard and was at the Battle of Marianna, Florida. He was lucky enough to escape across the Chipola River during the battle and survive the war. He married Sarah L. Robinson on 8 Oct 1884. James died on 18 Dec 1893. He is buried at St Luke's Church Cemetery. [FLORIDA CONFEDERATE PENSION APPLICATION # A01501]
