Riverside CemeteryGPS: Northwest Entrance N 30° 46.279' W85° 13.293' Riverside Cemetery is the city cemetery of Marianna, and has been in operation since the city of Marianna was established. The cemetery contains both white and black citizens. Marianna was an important post during the War for Southern Independence, and was the home of the Confederate Command west of the Apalachicola River, in Florida. A Confederate hospital, store houses, stables, and the local Commissary Department were located here. Some of the unknowns buried at Riverside may have been patients who died at the Confederate hospital. Others may have died during the Battle of Marianna. In any case Marianna is one of the few communities in Florida to have a Confederate Cemetery. The Union soldiers who died at the Battle of Marianna were buried here, before the Federal government removed their bodies to Pensacola in the late 1800’s.
