Theophilus West, M.D.
Theophilus West, M.D., son of Charles Bundick West and Zipporah F. Tapping, was born in Leon County, Florida on September 5, 1836. The 1860 census lists him in the Jackson County household of Mrs. Rebecca Russ. At the time of the 1860 census, he is twenty-four years old and his occupation is listed as Physician. He married Rebecca Davis Spears on March 14, 1861, at Marianna, Jackson County, Florida. Theophilus enlisted in Company E, 8th Florida Infantry Regiment on May 13, 1862, and moved thru the ranks from 2nd Sergeant to 1st Sergeant, and finally on July 15, 1862, he was promoted to Assistant Surgeon of the 8th Florida Infantry Regiment. Dr. West was one of the four officers from his regiment that surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia on April 9, 1865. He was paroled on April 10, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Returning to Marianna he practiced medicine and pharmacy until late in his life. His signature is found on many pension applications of the Confederate Veterans of Jackson County. Theophilus married Anna Louisa Slade on June 17, 1902. He died on April 10, 1923 and is buried at Riverside Cemetery, Marianna, Florida. [PENSION #A02456 - ANCESTRY. COM]
